The US Cup junior races continued on Saturday with Quebecer Zorak Paillé timing his best race of the weekend to coincide with the most important junior race of the week. The PG racing driver rode a long, hard-fought solo race to take third place in the UCI Junior Series XCO race in Arkansas.

US Cup XCO junior men – Paillé goes alone

Saturday being the most important day for the juniors, it was a fast and busy start. Ben Sweet (Hardwood Nextwave) and Zorak Paillé (PG Racing) fought their way forward for the Canadians. Bear National’s Ben Spranger and Cayden Parker, who swept the top spots in this week’s race, lurked near the front. With over 100 juniors on the start line, there was no space to relax, elbows were out and the lead was constantly changing.

Crossing the line after the start loop, the two Bear National riders begin to create a small gap, followed by Paillé. However, the rest of the pack is behind and charging hard.

Spranger and teammate Parker quickly created a small gap. Paillé was about 15 seconds behind but remained far from the fourth runner.

Driving alone, Paillé managed to contain this gap with the leaders for several laps. Thursday’s mud was gone, replaced by fast and harsh conditions, but the gusty wind remained. The Bear National riders used that advantage to widen the gap until Parker decided to go solo.

Coming out on the final lap, Parker maintained a 20-second gap over Spranger. Paillé stood at 1:48 in third position. A group chasing fourth position was far behind, more than a minute behind the Quebec rider.

Cayden Parker held on to his advantage to earn another US Cup victory this week. Jack Spranger trailed 27 seconds into second.

Zorak Paillé won a hard-fought third place, riding solo in the wind for the vast majority of Saturday’s race.

Simon Ruelland (Equipe du Québec/Sigma) finished ninth, joining Paillé in the top 10. Ian Ackert (Stimulus Orbea) moved up to 12th on the last lap. Alexander Woodford (Ontario/Ride with Rendall) placed 15th.

Schedule changes continue in Arkansas

United States Cup organizers are trying to reschedule the men’s and women’s elite races from Sunday to Saturday in a bid to avoid worse weather conditions. Rain and extreme winds are expected to begin overnight. The elite women started showing up soon after the junior men’s race was over. Elite men must report at 5:45 p.m. CT. Flobikes still seems to be streaming both races.
