XTERRA returns to Shelby County, Alabama in May 2023


XTERRA will return for its 16th year to Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County, Alabama. The off-road event specialist offers athletes… “a family-friendly festival featuring live music, beer gardens, food trucks, trail races, mountain bike races and all-terrain triathlons for pros and amateurs alike May 18-21, 2023.”

“Oak Mountain is the perfect location for XTERRA with miles and miles of world-class trails, incredible facilities, and incredible support from the park, county, state, and trail communities,” said said Steve Andrus, XTERRA US Tour Director.

“We’re thrilled to put this one on the schedule early and get to work putting together a first-class reunion for local families and adventure seekers from around the world.”

XTERRA first discovered Oak Mountain State Park in 2006; and the parks and trail systems have improved every year since, drawing athletes from around the country to Shelby County.

“We are very excited to welcome XTERRA back to Shelby County,” said Shelby County Tourism and Events Manager Kendall Williams.

“This event has been instrumental in gaining worldwide recognition for Oak Mountain State Park and its trails. We love that XTERRA attracts athletes of all skill levels, including world champions , and creates an incredibly fun environment for the whole community.

Shelby County, Oak Mountain State Park and Birmingham Urban Mountain Pedalers (BUMP) have spent more than 100,000 hours designing and building new trails over the past 25 years.

“BUMP is thrilled to welcome XTERRA to Oak Mountain,” said BUMP Race Director Jacob Tubbs. “We’ve worked hard to maintain and build new trails that are both fun and worthy of world-class racing, and we love seeing top athletes from around the world test themselves here.”

The full-distance XTERRA sprint and off-road triathlons will be held in conjunction with the XTERRA World Tour which draws elite racing from around the world for their share of the US$15,000 prize purse, as well as enthusiasts from across the United States. United trying to qualify for the XTERRA World Championships in Italy.

The main event combines a 1-mile swim at Double Oak Lake with a grueling 20-mile mountain bike ride on the Oak Mountain trails, following a twisty 10k run.

“We are thrilled to welcome XTERRA back to Oak Mountain State Park for another series of world-class races in 2023,” said Anna Jones, Oak Mountain State Park event coordinator. “It is our privilege to host XTERRA because it gives us the opportunity to showcase the beauty and significance of Alabama’s state parks.”
