Details of the scheduled test of a team relay event at the 2022 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas have been released.
According to Wielerflits.nl, the race will be composed of six riders – an elite man, an elite woman, and two men and two women from the U23 or junior ranks. Riders participating in the event must also participate in their respective fields at the World Championships.
The race will last six laps, with each runner completing a single lap of the 3km course and scoring the next runner in a transition zone. Each nation can determine its own starting order, and the final rider will determine the winner.
The race will take place at 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday, January 28, the first of three days of racing at Centennial Park in Fayetteville. This will be the opening event of the championships, which are sponsored by retail giant Walmart.
The UCI has been running a relay similar to the World Mountain Bike Championships since 1999 and expanded it to include U23 and then junior riders in the following years. In this case, the finishing runners tag the starting runners on opposite sides of a fixed barricade.
The cyclo-cross event differs from the team relay, which was recently introduced to the UCI Road World Championships, where three men and three women compete in a separate team time trial with the lowest cumulative time.
The titles for the junior and elite women as well as the U23 men will be decided on Saturday, while the rainbow jerseys for the junior men, U23 women and elite men will be confirmed on Sunday. Junior races did not take place in Ostend, Belgium last year due to precautions against the coronavirus pandemic.
