The organization of Il Lombardia presented the route of the 2021 edition of the race, which includes some changes.

After four consecutive years ending in Como, the 2021 route of the last Monument of the season will be covered in the opposite direction and the city will serve as the starting point of the race. The peloton will face a 239 kilometer course with an arrival in Bergamo – the city that hosted the finish of the race for the last time in 2016, which was won by Esteban Chaves – and several climbs that will make it difficult.

The Madonna del Ghisallo climb is the first that the riders will face on Saturday 9 October, then they will descend back down to Bellagio and reach Lecco along the shores of Lake Como. After entering the province of Bergamo, the peloton will tackle a series of climbs, with almost no flat sections in between.

The last kilometers feature a climb on cobblestones, after which there is a descent on a smooth surface.

Riders like Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma), Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos-Grenadiers), Vincenzo Nibali (Trek-Segafredo) and Chris Froome (Israel Start -Up Nation) have already confirmed their participation in the race.

“After the previous very special edition of Il Lombardia, run on the day of Ferragosto in 2020, the last Monument of the season returns to its original location in the international calendar with a new very selective course”, declared Mauro Vegni, RCS Sport Director of cycling. “The alternation between the cities of Como and Bergamo will this year see the start of the race in the city of Como and the finish in the city of Bergamo. The well-established relationship between RCS Sport and the Lombardy Region continues, which continues , in addition to Il Lombardia this year has already hosted some stages and the arrival of the 104th Giro d’Italia in Milan.

“‘The Leaf Fall Classic’, the last Monument on the international calendar, will have worldwide visibility thanks to television images produced by RAI and will be broadcast in 200 countries on 5 continents. It will be a route without steep climbs like that of Sormano , but a series of bumps for a total vertical drop of 4500 meters. As every year, there will be great champions at the start. This year we have riders of the caliber of Pogacar, Roglic, Evenepoel, Geoghegan Hart, Nibali and Froome for n ‘to name a few who I am sure will do the show. As always, the day after the pro race, there will be the Gran Fondo Il Lombardia which will start and end in Cantù, with the symbolic climbs of Ghisallo and Sormano. “
