A rainy and cold spring is most likely to delay the summer season at Big White Ski Resort.
“At Big White Ski Resort, our motto has always been ‘It’s the Snow,’ and this spring has been no different,” a statement read. Much of the ski area is still covered in snow, which has melted at a slower than normal rate due to the low temperatures.
The station’s summer schedule was scheduled to begin on June 30. That date has been pushed back a week to July 7, although there’s still a busy list of events planned for the summer months, involving everything from mountain bike races to beer, music festivals and even a Spartan race.
“In an ideal world, our trails would be open to local mountain bikers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy Big White every summer,” said Senior Vice President Michael Ballingall. “But, at this time, we do not anticipate that we will be able to do this safely by our initial opening date of June 30.”
The winter season ended on April 9. In the meantime, major updates are underway to prepare for next winter’s ski season, including new gondola cabins, grooming machines, and building upgrades.
