CEBU CITY, Philippines — Motorsport enthusiasts now have a haven to test their mettle as Cebuano sportsman Lou Ornopia built a 10-hectare course dubbed the “MS Motosuit Motorsports Park” in his hometown of San Remigio , north of Cebu.
Ornopia, one of the renowned leaders in organizing major motocross events in the country, said this park was his way of trying to reviving the once bustling motorsport scene in Cebu which has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also aims to provide livelihood for the people of his hometown in this northern city located about 91 kilometers northwest of Cebu City.
“Motorsport is in my blood,” said Ornopia, Cebu’s “renowned motocross godfather.” After a few years of inactivity, here I am again.
“In doing so, I also want to promote the beauty of our place and offer economic activity to our population through sports tourism in these difficult times,” he added.
The race course covers a total of 2.3 kilometers. It has a specially designed track, a first of its kind in Cebu, which caters to many sporting disciplines ranging from rally driving to motocross and mountain bike racing.
The Cebu Rally Club, a group led by famous Cebuano racer Lord Seno, praised Ornopia’s efforts to provide them with a suitable racing course that will serve as a training area and venue for future races.
“The Calambua, San Remigio track has a very exciting 2.3 km route. This poses unique challenges that Cebu rallyists are unfamiliar with. The change in elevation, quick turns and low traction are a perfect setting for some hardcore action. The club are really grateful to the Ornopia family for this, ”said Seno, who recently made an eye visit on the course.
Even Cebuano international racer Jong King finds the circuit a wonderful place to test his skills. He said the course is nicely modeled with natural terrain according to international standards.
The park that took Ornopia several months is now open to the public for training sessions only.
I hope to bring life and prosperity to Cebu Motorsports while helping the community by providing them with a source of income. I want to make Calambua the “Motorsport Capital of Cebu” in the future. This is my ultimate goal
‘Cebu Motorsport Capital’
Ornopia, the unique winner of the Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC) ‘Sportsman of the Year’ award, plans to organize at least two rally cross events in partnership with the CRC before the end of the year.
“We have to organize a competition so that the runners can apply what they have learned in practice and then assess their skill level. It gives them something to look forward to, ”said Ornopia.
“Of course, this will be done under strict health and safety protocols given our current situation. I will coordinate properly with the relevant government agencies on this matter. “
In 2022, Ornopia will make every effort to implement plans, targeting year-round activity for rallycross, motocross and mountain biking events, among others.
“I hope to bring life and prosperity back to Cebu’s motorsports while helping the community by providing them with a source of income. I want to make Calambua the “Motorsport Capital of Cebu” in the future. This is my ultimate goal, ”he said.
